German in universities

The study of German from beginners’ to PhD level is offered at four universities:

  • University of Auckland –  German
  • Victoria University – German
  • University of Canterbury – German
  • University of Otago – German

German language courses at these universities range from A1 (beginners) to C1 (advanced) level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (levels explained here). Goethe Institute exams are offered at all levels, providing students with internationally recognised certificates for their German language proficiency.

Courses in the German programmes include a wide range of literature, cinema, cultural, social and contemporary affairs, as well as translation and interpreting studies.

All universities have strong, active exchange programmes with partners in Germany (see here). Academic exchange is supported through a series of scholarships, including DAAD, PAD and university support.

Internships are available at all universities.

At all universities, German cultural and social events are offered for staff, students and the general public.
